News for faculty and staffJuly 9, 2009IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Apollo 11 anniversaryPurdue Today counts down to July 20 anniversary
On July 20, 1969, Purdue alumnus Neil Armstrong took his famous "small step" into history as the first human to set foot on the moon. The lunar landing inspired dreams of reaching farther into the heavens and inspired the people who could help make those dreams come true. In 1969, Armstrong's walk on the moon inspired President France A. Córdova to begin a career in science that has included serving as NASA chief scientist and working on projects such as the Hubble Space Telescope. In 2009, Córdova leads a university whose researchers and alumni -- including 22 astronauts -- continue to play a pivotal role in the U.S. space program. As the 40th anniversary approaches, Purdue Today will highlight Purdue research aimed at future lunar missions, share faculty and staff memories of the lunar landing, and provide details about how the University is marking the anniversary. Purdue researcher focuses on communications infrastructureAs NASA has continued to explore the heavens and dream of a lunar return, lunar outpost and Mars travel, many professors at Purdue are delving into the challenges those efforts and dreams present. One of those professors is Kathleen Howell, the Hsu Lo Professor of Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering. More Banners celebrating moon landing, Purdue astronauts
