New research field promises radical advances in optical technologies

Numerical simulations
A new research field called transformation optics may usher in a host of radical advances including a cloak of invisibility and ultra-powerful microscopes and computers by harnessing nanotechnology and "metamaterials."

The field, which applies mathematical principles similar to those in Einstein's theory of general relativity, will be described in an article to be published today (Oct. 17) in the journal Science. The article will appear in the magazine's Perspectives section and was written by Vladimir Shalaev, Purdue's Robert and Anne Burnett Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. More

Purdue, IU libraries collaborate on Web site celebrating bucket battle

Purdue and Indiana universities are celebrating one of college football's oldest prizes -- together.

As the Boilermakers and Hoosiers gear up for their Nov. 22 showdown at Purdue's Ross-Ade Stadium -- the 83rd battle for the Old Oaken Bucket -- the archives of both universities are paying tribute to the history. The two have collaborated on a joint Web site that documents the history and significance of the bucket rivalry. More

Córdova, student leaders to be recognized at annual dinner

President France A. Córdova and hundreds of student leaders will be recognized at an annual dinner on Tuesday (Oct. 21).

The Ninth Annual Presidents Dinner will take place at 5:30 p.m. in the Purdue Memorial Union North Ballroom and recognizes the accomplishments of Córdova and the 850 student organization presidents. More
