Purdue earthquake expert says April 18 earthquake largest recorded for the Wabash Vally fault system

A Purdue researcher says earthquake activity in the Midwest has been moderate in recent years, but the area has a history of much more powerful quakes.

Larry Braile, head of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, said the Midwest region includes both the Wabash Valley fault system that was hit Friday (April 18) and the New Madrid seismic zone. More

Historian: Politics and sports compete in every Olympic Games

While the Olympics are meant to stand above politics, politics has always been a part of these games, says a Purdue sports historian.

"Even the 1896 revival of the modern-day Olympics, thanks to Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin, had a political agenda," says Randy Roberts, Distinguished Professor of History. "De Coubertin was trying raise the profile for France after its loss in the Franco-Prussian War more than two decades earlier. His interest in sports and the Olympics was to encourage the development of French masculinity and international collaboration." More

A transistor that outperforms its silicon counterpart and a method that improves detection of food-borne pathogens, such as salmonella and E. coli, were two new technologies presented by Purdue researchers at a recent symposium. More

Appointments, honors and promotions

-- Vanessa Puckett is the new assistant director of special events.
-- Barbara Leonard is now a writer/editor in Engineering Communications. She previously served as the communications coordinator for advancement.
-- Nicholas Taylor is now Web strategy and systems manager at Purdue Marketing Communications.
-- Stephen Elliott, a professor of industrial technology, was promoted to vice chair for membership and ballots of the International Committee for Information Technology Standards M1 Technical Committee on Biometrics.
-- Michael Whitt, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering technology, recently received the 2008 Achievement in Science and Technical Disciplines Award from the Indianapolis-based Center for Leadership Development.
-- The Residence Hall Association named Michael Witt, assistant professor of library science, as Faculty Fellow of the Year for his volunteer work in Shreve Hall.
