A memorial service for the late Yujiro Shidara, a post-doctoral researcher in biological sciences, will be held at 10 a.m. today (Dec. 13) at the Soller-Baker funeral home chapel, 1184 Sagamore Parkway in West Lafayette. He was killed after an automobile accident on Sunday, Dec. 9.

Scientists develop new measure of 'socioclimatic' risk

As the United Nations climate negotiations proceed in Bali, Indonesia, researchers have taken a first step toward quantifying the "socioclimatic" exposure of different countries to future climate change.

The research team from Purdue and the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy, found that China, India and the United States - major greenhouse gas-emitting nations that are currently unbound by the Kyoto treaty - face substantial exposure relative to other nations, but that every area of the world faces high exposure in at least one category. Living longer with obesity means heavier burden for hospitals

Living longer with obesity can lead to both longer hospital stays and more avoidable trips to the hospital, according to two new studies from Purdue.

"Americans are overweight, and there are numerous studies that cite the problems of obesity," said Ken Ferraro, a professor of sociology. "However, as the age at which people become obese continues to get younger, we wanted to know how living longer with obesity affects people. More

Purdue center takes on North American battle against multidrug-resistant tuberculosis

Multidrug- resistant tuberculosis has a new challenger, a center in the Purdue Research Park that on Tuesday (Dec. 11) became the sole North American producer of a potent antibiotic.

The drug, Seromycin, had been developed earlier by Eli Lilly and Co., which, in turn, gave the park's Chao Center for Industrial Pharmacy & Contract Manufacturing the exclusive rights to manufacture, distribute and sell the drug. More

U.S. chief of naval operations to commission Purdue ROTC students

Adm. Gary Roughead, U.S. chief of naval operations (CNO), will commission 35 Purdue University ROTC graduates during a ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday (Dec. 17) in the Purdue Memorial Union South Ballroom.

Roughead will commission 15 ensigns from the Naval ROTC, four second lieutenants from the Army ROTC and 16 second lieutenants from the Air Force ROTC. These new officers will immediately go on to train in their respective specialties in the U.S. military. More

Bowman to lead Purdue's School of Materials Engineering

Keith J. Bowman
Keith J. Bowman has been appointed the new head of Purdue's School of Materials Engineering, effective Dec. 31, said Leah Jamieson, the John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering.

Bowman, a professor in materials engineering with another appointment in the Department of Engineering Education, will replace Alexander H. King. King will leave Purdue to become director of the Ames National Laboratory, which is owned by the U.S. Department of Energy and run by Iowa State University. More

Purdue entomologist Tom Turpin is the 2007 recipient of the Frederick L. Hovde Award of Excellence in Educational Service to Rural People of Indiana. More
