Keith J. Bowman has been appointed the new head of Purdue University's School of Materials Engineering, effective Dec. 31, said Leah Jamieson, the John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering.

Bowman, a professor in materials engineering with another appointment in the Department of Engineering Education, will replace Alexander H. King. King will be leaving Purdue to become director of the Ames National Laboratory, which is owned by the U.S. Department of Energy and run by Iowa State University.

Bowman has taught and conducted research at Purdue since 1988 and was promoted to full professor in 1996. He served as acting head of the department for the 2005-06 academic year while King was on leave with the U.S. Department of State.

In 1995 Bowman received Purdue's highest teaching award, the Charles Murphy Undergraduate Teaching Award.

Bowman received his bachelor's and master’s degrees in metallurgy and material sciences from Case Western University in 1981 and 1983, respectively, and his doctorate in materials sciences and engineering from the University of Michigan in 1987.
