2016 Purdue Chapter Annual Banquet – a Success!

05-12-2016

Forty members and guests attended the 2016 Purdue Chapter Banquet on April 6 at the John Purdue Room. The evening began with a social hour and poster session featuring the first place winners from this year's Sigma Xi Poster Competition. These posters represented the work of eleven graduate student and post-doctoral researchers representing five different departments. Awards were presented to these researchers by Professor Howard Zelaznik (Health and Kinesiology).

Professor Louis Sherman (Dept. of Biological Sciences) inducted two new members to our chapter – Professor Shelley Claridge and Research Associate Madduri Srinivasarao, both from Purdue's Department of Chemistry.

Purdue Chapter President Peter T. Kissinger introduced two special guests: Professor Ernesto Marinero (School of Materials Engineering, Purdue University), and Distinguished Professor Mikhail Atallah (Dept. of Computer Science, Purdue University). Professor Marinero is the newest member of the Executive Committee for the Purdue Chapter of Sigma Xi and Professor Atallah received the 2016 Senior Faculty Research Award.

This evening's Keynote Speaker, Professor Herman Sintim (Drug Discovery Professor of Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Purdue University Center for Drug Discovery), gave a wonderful talk on the topic of "Antibiotic Resistance: Ticking Time Bomb and a Shocking Negligence by the Most Prosperous Generation", which was followed by a very lively Q&A session.

All adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
