Dr. Ignacio Camarillo

Dr. Ignacio Camarillo, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences, College of Science, instructs a wide range of students from an introductory to a professional level. Camarillo works diligently with the Purdue Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging, Office of Graduate Diversity Initiatives and has been recruiting underrepresented minority students for 17 years. He is the program director for the Purdue Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP), an institutional and mentorship organization that engages undergraduate and graduate minority students to pursue independent research. LSAMP continuously yields impressive results due to Camarillo’s central role in facilitating students’ strong communication skills, STEM identity, and practice in science idea development.  Camarillo’s efforts have been vital towards institutionalizing this program which supports students at all levels.

In addition to his academic career, Camarillo serves as an exemplar in the Purdue community in a multitude of extracurricular capacities. Camarillo champions several organizations that guide Purdue’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Furthermore, Camarillo empowers students as the co-founder and sponsor of the Purdue chapter of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS). The Purdue SACNAS Chapter, established over 15 years ago, has won several national recognitions for facilitate mentoring, success in science and inclusiveness, including its highest honor of SACNAS Chapter of the year. Camarillo’s efforts in inclusion belonging make Purdue an accessible place for students to grow and thrive.

Camarillo’s current research interests investigate exercise, diet, and breast cancer prevention. He has served as a longtime director of the Purdue Center for Cancer Research (PCCR), a branch of the Purdue Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) to create more experiential education opportunities for students. This organization provides a range of research opportunities that are pivotal to matriculation into advanced STEM graduate programs.

Camarillo teaches BIO 131, Development, Structure And Function of Organisms, and has participated in two different Purdue IMPACT training experiences, which have been critical to the incorporation of novel technologies, infusing discussions on equitable science practices, and improving assessment strategies to improve student learning. His GS 490, LSAMP Professional Development Seminar is central to serving first time LSAMP scholars as it centers on building skills critical for preparing students for optimal undergraduate research experiences, establishing long term mentoring relationships with URM graduate students, and facilitating student STEM career exploration.

Additionally, Camarillo has won the Purdue Top Ten Teachers in the College of Science Award, Purdue University Latino Staff and Faculty Association (LaFASA) Outstanding Faculty Award, and Purdue University SACNAS Chapter and SACNAS Chapter of the Year Award.
