Dr. Johnny Brown

Professor

Mathematics, College of Science

Dr. Johnny Brown, Professor of Mathematics, College of Science, is passionate about mathematics and student learning. Brown aims to make his lectures exciting for students across all majors in each of his courses. He is interactive in the classroom by posting study guides and challenge problems and strives to create a learning environment in which students feel comfortable to ask questions and challenge themselves.

From the start of his teaching career, Brown has prioritized relationships with his students, which he believes impacts students’ learning and success. Brown has inspired students to pursue a mathematics major or minor after taking his courses, and he regularly receives messages from former students thanking him for preparing them for their future.

As a subject matter expert, Brown provides extra notes, practice problems, explanations, demonstrations, and study guides to assist his students. He is responsible for creating the first course calendar that is now prevalent on all large calculus department course pages. Beyond the course material, Brown has devoted many hours to holding outside review sessions for students.

Brown’s teaching inspires life-long learning. He motivates his students to learn on their own and strives to push knowledge beyond course material. Brown uses interdisciplinary collaboration connecting his lectures with supplemental courses. For example, he shows students how his classes connect directly to upper-level math courses, and how certain topics specifically connect to the real world. He links course material to real-world situations so his students can see the big picture beyond just the course content. Brown enjoys the challenge of showing students where mathematics comes from and how it is used, instilling life-long enthusiasm for mathematics.

The following table maps Dr. Brown’s teaching excellence evidence to evaluation activities.
