Transformative Education 2.0

Transformative Education 2.0 began in 2020 as a new Purdue Move building on institutional conversations, listening sessions, and forums conducted in 2017 that developed Purdue’s Road Map for Transformative Undergraduate Education .

We are expanding and redefining our concepts of degree planning and progression, student engagement, data-driven decisions, experiential education, and innovative teaching at scale. We are committed to make the value proposition of a ‘residential learning experience’ crystal clear as we re-think and renew the student experience.

Our goal is to make Purdue University the most innovative residential learning program in the US among large research universities through:

  • Deep investment and strategic expansion in experiential education
  • Flexible cross-disciplinary as well as transdisciplinary degree and credential pathways
  • A data-driven ecosystem that improves retention, progression, graduation, and satisfaction
  • Integrated student life experiences and multiple work/learn options for paths to graduation
  • Creative use of advanced technologies and online learning to enhance residential courses and improve student success

Transformative Education 2.0 is organized within two main areas that have multiple work streams and project areas: Innovation College and Road Map Foundations

Near-Term, Institutional Decisions

  • Purdue has decided to stay with institutional systems for the near term.
    • Banner (Student Information System)
    • Brightspace (Learning Management System)
    • Degree Works (Degree Coding and Requirements ONLY)
    • Purdue Data Analytics Platform
  • Purdue is negotiating with EduNav as the new platform for degree planning that will enhance the success of students progressing to graduation.
  • Purdue has committed to building a new Student Data Warehouse and integrating institutional data sources.

Spring 2022 Updates

Processes & Systems

  • Negotiating with EduNav as the new platform for degree planning that will enhance the success of students progressing to graduation.
  • Planning small, pilot implementation group that will develop processes, infrastructure, trainings, and other institutional supports to maximize scale-up across campus.

Communication & Engagement

  • Analyzing the communication and student engagement landscape to develop recommendations for a Campus Student Engagement Plan.
  • Multiple, cross-disciplinary teams working with students to 1) inventory campus communications tools, 2) benchmark peer and aspirational institutions, and 3) analyze the market for leading campus communication solutions.

Data & Reporting

  • Conducting a curricular analytics pilot with campus stakeholders to determine how data can improve curricular decision making.
  • Engaging campus stakeholders in identifying and prioritizing reports utilizing the new Brightspace Data Warehouse.
  • Building a new Student Data Warehouse and integrating institutional data sources that comprise over 2,000 tables and 60,000 columns of student data as well as integrating the Graduate School Database.

Experiential Education

  • Published a report that analyzed over 350+ experiential education programs at Purdue. See executive summary here.
  • Investigating a tool(s) to enable campus reporting and tracking of experiential education activities as well as help facilitate student reflection of experiential education opportunities.

Innovation Hub

  • Initiated a funding framework for teams and individuals to pursue innovative projects emphasizing transdisciplinary experiences for students at scale. Apply here.
  • Launched mentored proposal writing programs with the EVPRP focused on large, federal grants for research on teaching and learning. Contact the Innovation Hub here.

Fall 2022 Updates

  • Preliminary findings indicate transforming the end-to-end process will position Purdue to quickly respond to market demand for new majors.
  • Academic proposals will go from ideation to implementation at a faster pace than the current structure allows.
  • Purdue will be able to meet ongoing demands for innovative curricula at the same time balancing appropriate faculty oversight and regulatory compliance.
  • Conflict resolution will occur earlier in ideation phase to avoid last minute stalling of program launch.
