Monroe County Master Gardener Association Celebrates 30 Years

On November 13, members of the Monroe County Master Gardener Association assembled in Bloomington to kick off their 30th Anniversary Celebration.  The celebration included remarks from John Orick, Purdue Master Gardener State Coordinator, followed by “The Story of the Master Gardener Association: A Look Back and a Look to the Future.”  Founding members plus original Board members attended the event.

Following the re-establishment of the Purdue Master Gardener Program in Monroe County, the Monroe County Master Gardener Association formally organized in January 1989.  Their mission is provide public education on horticultural knowledge and practices as outlined in the state guidelines, and to assist in the certification of those who successfully completed training by offering organized activities.  Some of their volunteer opportunities include maintaining the Courthouse Native Garden, and Cheryl’s Garden at Karst Farm Park (named after a  Master Gardener), coordinating a regional Garden Fair, helping maintain WonderGarden at Wonder Lab, and various other volunteer opportunities in Monroe County. In addition, MCMGA offers many continuing educational opportunities with lectures, workshops and excursions.
