Remember the Four-Step plan:
- Equilibrium: Draw an FBD of connector C and write down the equilibrium equation from this FBD.
- Force/elongation equations: Write down the force/elongation equation for each member: ei = FiLi/EAi + αΔTiLi.
- Compatibility equations: Write down the elongation/displacement compatibility equation relating the elongations of rods (1) and (2).
- Solve: Solve the equations generated in Steps 1-3 for the loads carried in the two rods and the displacement of connector C.
