Opportunity

What needs to be addressed?

The Greatriarchs Project is a public art initiative that collects oral histories from neighborhood elders to capture and celebrate the rich cultural heritage within the Northend neighborhoods, while also enhancing a sense of community connectedness by bringing residents together to paint murals of the elders, the Greatriarchs. The Greatriarchs Project provided an opportunity for Purdue’s Transformative Scholarship Research Generator (TREKS) students to support this community-centered project by partnering with Lincoln Neighborhood residents.

Connection

How did Purdue get involved?

TREKS exists to bring local, regional, national, and international students, faculty, industries, and communities together to develop engaged undergraduate scholars equipped to change the world through the co-creation of knowledge and mutually beneficial projects, tools, and resources focused on improving the quality of life. Purdue’s group of TREKS students through the Purdue John Martinson Honors College facilitated the first Greatriarchs mural painting with Lincoln Neighborhood and Greater Lafayette residents—under the direction of commissioned artist Bekki Canine—which has been incorporated into the Lafayette–West Lafayette Public Art Trail Guide.
