Grant Summary
The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation responded to a proposal submitted by multiple Purdue University units to integrate research in the humanities and social sciences with that in the STEM fields, and disseminate the results in collaboration with Libraries and the University Press. The Mellon-funded grant was to expand the capacity for diverse, multidisciplinary discovery and drive beneficial change, raise public awareness, and improve the human condition. The grant funded the work of five teams exploring multidisciplinary approaches to address a World Grand Challenge.

James L. Mullins
Dean of Libraries and Esther Ellis Norton Professor
Jim Mullins is the Dean of Libraries at Purdue and Esther Ellis Norton Professor of Library Science. He has nearly four decades of library experience and has served in leadership positions within the American Library Association, Association of Research Libraries, and a number of other groups. Through publications and presentations, he has influenced and helped revise the practices and standards for university research libraries.

Andrew D. Tuholski, Ph.D.
Graduate Assistant
Andrew D. Tuholski served as the Graduate Assistant for the Grand Challenges grant from Fall 2014 through its conclusion in 2016. He earned his Ph.D. in political science from Purdue University in December 2016 with specializations in Public Policy and American Politics. His research interests include health care policy, environmental policy, Congress, and the Presidency.
