A new University Residences program is aimed at helping all Purdue students feel accepted and supported no matter their race, gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or life experiences.
The University Network for Inclusive Training and Experience (UNITE) program, begun last year in Wiley Hall, offers monthly programming related to those themes and others such as body image or homesickness.
Faculty and staff news
The 2013 Nobel Prize in physics today (Oct. 8) was awarded to Francois Englert and Peter Higgs for their work in developing the theory of the Higgs field, and Purdue researchers were part of the international experiment that proved its existence.
Purdue faculty and staff turned out in big numbers for early 2014 medical plan information offerings from Human Resources. Because the early sessions were so popular, Human Resources has combined their content into a single presentation called "The Big Picture."
Procurement Services is pleased to announce that beginning Oct. 14, when the Ariba Procure-to-Pay system launches, more than 500 vendors will be enabled on the Ariba network including at least 25 catalogs with discounted pricing. The dollars spent with these vendors represents approximately 85 percent of the annual purchase order volume at the University.
Faculty, students and staff are invited to a series of seminars covering such topics as virtual and augmented reality, modeling and animation, and real-time simulated environments for research and teaching, to be held at ITaP's Envision Center in October and November.
Purdue's Weight Watchers at Work program offers a discount rate to help those looking either to achieve significant, long-term weight loss or just trying to shed a few pounds. Provided through the Division of Recreational Sports, the program provides an effective, proven path to change.

President to appear at education summit, on 'Daily Rundown'
President Mitch Daniels today (Oct. 8) will be a guest panelist at the fourth annual NBC Education Nation Summit, which brings together the nation's top thought leaders and influential policymakers to discuss the relationship between education and opportunity. While in New York City for the summit, Daniels also is making several media appearances. The following can be viewed today:
- NBC Education Nation Summit panel, "What It Takes: More than High School - Disrupting Higher Ed." Live streamed at approximately 8 a.m. at EducationNation.com.
- Appearance on MSNBC's "The Daily Rundown" with Chuck Todd at approximately 9:35 a.m. (full show airs 9-10 a.m.). In Lafayette-West Lafayette, MSNBC is on Comcast at Channel 51 and Channel 1108 (HD); on Boiler Television on Channel 9; on DirecTV on Channel 356; and on DISH Network on Channel 209.
Officials from Florida-based Sypris Electronics LLC and city and county officials will dedicate a new research and development center at 10 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 10) in the Herman and Heddy Kurz Purdue Technology Center, 1281 Win Hentschel Blvd.

Purdue's Schwartz Tennis Center will offer adult tennis classes including Drill of the Day, beginner and intermediate sessions, and Twilight Tennis. A list of the fall programs, which begin Wednesday (Oct. 9), is available at www.purduetennis.com.
