As 2013-14 chair of the University Senate, David Williams plans to champion policies that will help establish Purdue as a national leader in affordable, excellent higher education. Williams, professor of medical illustration in the College of Veterinary Medicine, has been at Purdue for more than 40 years and is a longtime Senate member.
Faculty and staff news
The Purdue community is invited to join President Mitch Daniels for a President's Forum on Thursday (Sept. 12) in the South Ballroom, Purdue Memorial Union. The forum, scheduled for 8-9:30 a.m., will focus on Purdue's new agenda -- initiatives developed from across the University that are designed to place Purdue among the great academic institutions of the world.
New clerical, service and operations/technical employees hired on or after Sept. 9 will be enrolled in a new Non-Exempt Defined Contribution Plan to be administered by Fidelity.
The $500 per person tobacco-user additional premium will continue for 2014 Purdue medical plans. The additional premium applies to employees and covered spouses/same-sex domestic partners (SSDPs). If both people in the couple use tobacco and are covered by the plan, the additional premium will be $1,000.
The Division of Recreational Sports is hosting a Zumbathon on Sept. 19 to benefit the Purdue United Way Campaign.
"Thumbs Up" gives faculty and staff the chance to recognize others on campus for a job well done.

This is the seventh consecutive year the quality of Purdue's first-year class has risen, which continues to have a positive impact on the University's retention and graduation rates as well as overall student success.
Taking challenging coursework in middle school and high school not only prepares students for success in college but also is the best predictor of both college readiness and college success, says Pamela T. Horne, associate vice provost for enrollment management and dean of admissions.
The Confucius Institute at Purdue will offer "Basic Mandarin Chinese" this fall.
The College of Liberal Arts Study Abroad Fair will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday (Sept. 11) on Memorial Mall.
