Vote center open today at PMU

Vote centers in Tippecanoe County are open 6 a.m.-6 p.m. today. One of the 20 centers countywide is in Room 118, PMU. For more on the county's vote centers, go to www.tippecanoe.in.gov/election_board/division.asp?fDD=14-260. When going to vote, be sure to take proper photo ID.

Enrollment period for 2009 benefits approaches deadline

Open enrollment for 2009 benefits ends Friday (Nov. 7). Employees who received their enrollment kits late will automatically be granted extra days to enroll and do not need to contact Staff Benefits to request an extension. Questions about enrollment may be directed to staffbenefits@purdue.edu.

Native birds might restock poultry industry's genetic stock

As concerns such as avian flu, animal welfare and consumer preferences impact the poultry industry, the reduced genetic diversity of commercial bird breeds increases their vulnerability and the industry's ability to adapt, according to a genetics expert.

Purdue animal sciences professor Bill Muir was part of an international research team that analyzed the genetic lines of commercial chickens used to produce meat and eggs around the world. Researchers found that commercial birds are missing more than half of the genetic diversity native to the species, possibly leaving them vulnerable to new diseases and raising questions about their long-term sustainability.
