Purdue Presidential Inauguration

France A. Córdova became Purdue's 11th president on July 16, 2007, and will be formally inaugurated April 11 in Elliott Hall of Music. Leading up to the inauguration, Purdue Today will take a look at Purdue's past leaders. Today, our second president, Abraham Shortridge.

Presidents of Purdue's past:
Abraham C. Shortridge, 1874-1875


Abraham C. Shortridge was in charge when Purdue matriculated its first students on Sept. 16, 1874. Thirty-nine applicants were admitted, some conditionally. Women were enrolled for the first time the following fall. His administration lasted just 18 months due to his failing health.

Dragon boat racing motivates cancer survivors to battle upstream

Dragon boat racing
A Purdue sport and exercise psychology professor will follow about 50 breast cancer survivors on Indianapolis' newly formed dragon boat racing team to better understand how such camaraderie affects quality of life issues.

"These breast cancer survivors are literally all in the same boat together," says Meghan McDonough, an assistant professor of health and kinesiology who studies the role relationships play in physical activity. "This is a wonderful opportunity to work with a team as it forms and to really understand how these women's involvement and relationships affect their lives. More

New book 'Uncle' a journey into Purdue founder's life

The large picture on the wall of a relative's house piqued young Irene McCammon Scott's interest.

When she became an adult, it gnawed at her.

Who was this person, and why did he command such status?

The man was John Purdue, an entrepreneur who came from humble beginnings to earn riches and found Purdue University. He is the subject of McCammon Scott's new book. "Uncle: My Journey With John Purdue" looks at Purdue's life through McCammon Scott's original research, as well as through collections of his personal correspondence, business ledgers and family members' oral histories. The Purdue University Press recently published the book. More
