Appointments, honors and activities

• Campus activities:

— Students in Timothy Newby's Introduction to Educational Technology and Computing class will present a poster session on ways to use Web 2.0 technologies such as Facebook, Google Docs, Flickr and Twitter in K-16 classrooms. Students worked in teams that included participants from England, Russia, South Korea and Sweden. They developed online resources for teachers that detail how to use the applications. The poster session, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday (Dec. 8) in Stewart Center Room 218.

• Faculty and staff honors:

— Ahmed Elmagarmid, a professor of computer science and director of the Cyber Center in Discovery Park, is a 2009 recipient of an ACM Distinguished Membership. The honor is given by the Association for Computing Machinery to members who have made significant contributions to the computing industry and have had at least 15 years of professional experience.

— Wojtek Szpankowski, Purdue’s Saul Rosen Professor of Computer Science, is a 2009 recipient of the Humboldt Research Award. The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany gives this award to nominees who have provided significant impact on academics within their discipline and are expected to continue to provide cutting-edge discoveries during their careers. Recipients are to hold leading position in foreign research institutes, and will collaborate with a research institute in Germany.

 

• Alumni honors:

— Naren Ramakrishnan was named a Distinguished Scientist of the Association for Computing Machinery. Ramakrishnan earned his doctoral decree in computer science from Purdue in 1997, and is a professor in the Virginia Tech Department of Computer Science. 

 

• Student honors:

— Hannah Bergeman, a senior in Natural Resources and Environmental Science; Christine Chung, a Natural Resources and Environmental Science alumna; and Maya Zawadsky-Weist, a junior in Agricultural and Biological Engineering, will attend the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to be held Dec. 7-19 in Copenhagen, Denmark. They will post blogs, photos and Twitter updates from the meeting on the Purdue Climate Change Research Center Web: https://www.purdue.edu/climate/
