Purdue Extension honors Dubois County educator with Crooks Award

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service educator whose work helped boost Dubois County 4-H program membership by more than 30 percent received the Paul B. Crooks Award on Wednesday (Nov. 18) during the Purdue Extension awards banquet.

Kendall Martin, Dubois County Extension director and 4-H youth development educator, also has contributed to the growth of the Dubois 4-H member Advantage Program, played a key role in county 4-H fundraising, improved the 4-H livestock and awards program, and created a 4-H project for youth with physical disabilities and learning and language barriers.

"Kendall is a great example of what an Extension educator should be," said Chuck Hibberd, director of Purdue Extension and associate dean of agriculture. "His work has touched the lives of thousands of people, both young and old. He is most deserving of this honor."

Martin joined Purdue Extension in 1991. Since that time membership in Dubois 4-H has increased from 800 to more than 1,200.

In addition to Dubois 4-H, Martin has been active in state, regional and national Extension activities, including State 4-H Visioning Committee, serving as co-chair; Indiana Extension Educator Association (IEEA) 4-H Youth Section, where he's been president, vice president and secretary; State 4-H Youth Round-Up; State 4-H Advisory Council; State 4-H Junior Leader Conference; IEEA Budget and Audit Committee; Joint Council of Extension Professionals; North Central Regional Leaders Forum; and a host of committees and programs affiliated with the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents (NAE4-HA), among others.

Martin has received the NAE4-HA Achievement in Service Award, the IEEA Successful Program Award two times and the Distinguished Service Award, and was inducted into Epsilon Sigma Phi, an organization dedicated to fostering standards of excellence in the Extension system.

The Crooks Award is presented annually to a Purdue Extension educator with 10 or more years of experience who has shown significant impact in their assigned areas, excellence in teamwork and collaboration, and exceptional Extension programming. The award includes a $1,000 cash endowment.

The award is named for Paul B. Crooks, an Extension educator in Benton, Fountain and Morgan counties. Crooks also was associate director of Purdue Extension from 1962-82. The award has been presented each year since 1985.
