'Hands-on' engineering open house planned for K-6 students

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue Women in Engineering will host an open house Saturday (Nov. 7) where elementary school students can explore basic engineering concepts.

The open house will be from 9 a.m. to noon in the Civil Engineering Building, Room 3153. It is free and open to students in grades K-6, but parental supervision is required.

Students will participate in a variety of activities. Younger children will make a tornado in a bottle and learn how engineers are involved in making emergency notification systems. They also will make "kite cars" out of paper, straws and Lifesavers that will be powered by their own breath.

Older students will interact with an "electronic playground" to learn about electricity. They will be challenged to make a table out of only newspaper and masking tape. Students also will make blades for a model wind turbine and learn how turbines benefit the environment.

Registration is encouraged, although walk-ins also can participate. To register, visit https://engineering.purdue.edu/WIEP/NewsAndEvents/
