Elliott Hall fire under investigation

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University fire and police officials are investigating a fire that occurred Monday (Oct. 19) in the basement of the Elliott Hall of Music.

The fire was reported at about 8:30 p.m. by a member of a student patrol. Approximately 900 students taking an exam in the building were evacuated as firefighters worked to extinguish two separate fires in the basement – one in a band locker room and the other in a hallway. The fires were put out and smoke was cleared from the building, which made it possible for students to reenter at about 9:30 p.m. to gather their personal belongings.

Investigators from the police and fire departments were still at the scene late Monday. No damage estimate was available, and no potential cause for the fire has been determined, said Purdue Fire Department Chief Kevin Ply.
