A new courtyard outside the John W. Hicks Undergraduate Library at Purdue University will be dedicated Saturday (Oct. 17).

The courtyard, called A Place in the Sun, is a gift of the Purdue Class of 1980. The courtyard is located between Purdue Memorial Union and Stewart Center bordering State Street.

Purdue President France A. Córdova will speak at the courtyard dedication. The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m.

Construction on the courtyard began in mid-summer and was completed this fall. The brick-paved courtyard is 4,432 square feet. It cost $100,000, all of which was raised by the Class of 1980. The fundraising was led by Cheryl Cunningham of Parsons, Cunningham & Shartle Engineers in Avon, Ind., who has a degree in civil engineering; and Steve Ford of Ford Meter Box in Wabash, Ind., who has a degree in electrical and computer engineering.

Class gifts, commemorating 25th and 50th anniversaries, are a tradition dating back more than 100 years and range from buildings, fountains, artwork and green spaces to scholarships.
