Appointments, honors and activities

• Campus activities:

— Registration for spring semester begins in October. All Purdue students should check https://mypurdue.purdue.edu/cp/home/loginf  for their registration times beginning Oct. 19. The spring semester starts Jan. 11 and ends May 8. Students should make an appointment with their academic advisors now, unless the school in which they are enrolled provides them with special instructions for registration.

 

• Faculty and staff honors:

— Tom Turpin, entomology professor at Purdue, will be receive the Entomological Foundation’s Medal of Honor on Dec. 14 for his dedication and accomplishments in the entomology field. The award is the highest award that the foundation bestows and is only given to those who attain excellence through contributions to entomology. Turpin currently teaches one of the most popular entomology courses at Purdue, drawing more than 450 students each semester. He is the creator of the Bug Bowl, which attracted more than 30,000 visitors in 2009.

— The Indiana Council for Economic Education (ICEE) received the Adam Smith Award from the Council for Economic Education (CEE). This award was created to highlight and honor the achievements of individuals or organizations that have worked on the economic principals of the national education reform movement. The ICEE is a nonprofit organization affiliate with the Purdue’s Department of Agricultural Economics. Its mission is to improve the economic literacy of Indiana citizens, especially K-12 students. The CEE tracks in-service economics education professional development activities for all affiliated State Councils for Economic Education, and Indiana is first in professional development contact hours provided tor teachers. ICEE also has developed and distributed more K-12 economics curriculum material than other state-level organizations.

— Purdue's College of Engineering graduate program has been ranked No. 2 in the country by Hispanic Business magazine. The ranking is based on diversity measures aimed at Hispanic enrollment, faculty, student services, retention, and reputation among Hispanics. Georgia Institute of Technology was the top-ranked graduate engineering program by the magazine.
