September 24, 2009 Latino Cultural Center's annual dinner to fund local scholarshipsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University's Latino Cultural Center is partnering with United Businesses Serving the Community, a local nonprofit organization, to host its second annual dinner and dance on Oct. 17 at the Holiday Inn Select in downtown Lafayette.Proceeds from the event will be distributed as scholarships to local high school graduates for college education. Last year the event benefited four local students who now are attending Purdue University and Ivy Tech Community College, said Maricela Alvarado, director of the Latino Cultural Center. "One of the aims of this event is to bring together leadership in the community and campus to build stronger relationships that enhance the development of the local Latino population," Alvarado said. "This event provides an opportunity to network with local business owners, political figures, campus and community leaders, and students. "The theme of this year's event is education, and we hope that funds raised will help local students realize their dreams of going to college." The event also will showcase recent accomplishments of the local Latino community as well as look into the future plans of United Businesses Serving the Community, said Tony Del Real, the organization's president. United Businesses Serving the Community's purpose is to enhance the involvement of the local Latino population in the social, economic, cultural, educational and religious life in and around Tippecanoe County. Special guests at the dinner/dance include Marion Superior Court Judge Jose D. Salinas, Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski, West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis and Chancellor David Bathe from Ivy Tech Community College's Lafayette campus. The event, which is from 5:30 p.m. to midnight, will feature live music by Profecia VII, a band from Frankfort, Ind. Tickets are $50 per person and can be obtained by mailing the payment to UBSC, P.O. Box 4832, Lafayette, Ind. 47903. Those interested in attending need to RSVP by sending in their payments by Oct. 2.
