Appointments, honors and activities

• Appointments and promotions:

- The governing board of the North Central Nursing Clinics and the Purdue University School of Nursing have named Jim Layman executive director for two nurse-managed health-care facilities in rural, north central Indiana. The North Central Nursing Clinics operate the Family Health Clinic of Carroll County in Delphi, Ind., and the Family Health Clinic of Monon, Ind. Both are affiliated with the Purdue School of Nursing. This position is new thanks to funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act from the Health Resources and Services Administration. Layman has served as the medical benefits manager for Purdue since 2005 and previously was business manager for the Purdue Student Health Center.

 

• Campus activities:

- Purdue's Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences is holding an open house from 4-7 p.m. Monday (Aug. 31) in the Civil Engineering Building, Room 2201. Teachers and the public are invited to visit the department to learn about available equipment and kits for classroom demonstrations; education workshops offered; and the availability of demonstrations, tours and the geology self-guided walking tour. In addition, participants can find out more about the Doppler on Wheels radar that will be on campus in October. More information is available at https://www.purdue.edu/eas/outreach

 

• Faculty and staff honors:

- Thomas Brady, an associate professor of industrial engineering technology at Purdue University North Central, has been named a Lugar Energy Patriot by U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind. Brady will be on sabbatical at the university's School of Industrial Engineering on the West Lafayette campus in 2010 to work with Mark Lehto, an associate professor of industrial engineering. The Lugar Energy Patriot award is part of an ongoing effort by Lugar to recognize professionals, scholars, students or businesses that demonstrate leadership and initiative in taking concrete action to reduce America's dependence on foreign energy sources through renewable energy and conservation.

- Steven Dietrich, a captain with the Purdue Police Department, was honored with the Director's Award for Outstanding Performance from the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. Dietrich was honored for his work as watch officer for the Indiana Intelligence Fusion Center. Monte McKee, Indiana Homeland Security executive director, presented Dietrich with the award in late June, following Dietrich's two years of service to the center. The watch officer program is staffed by officers from police agencies around the state. Dietrich will return to Purdue to conduct threat and security assessment for the police department and the university, said Purdue Police Chief John Cox.

 

• Alumni honors:

- Christian F. Hempelmann, who earned a doctorate in linguistics in 2003; Paul Kei Matsuda, who earned a doctorate in English in 2000; and David E. Omholt, who earned a bachelor's degree in economics in 1992, were the College of Liberal Arts' 2009 Emerging Voice Award recipients. Hempelmann, is director of ontological semantics at RiverGlass Inc., Matsuda is an associate professor of English at Arizona State University, and Omholt is the founder and CEO of The Entrepreneur Authority. - Louis Filosa, who graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in industrial design, is one of eight Electrolux Design Lab 2009 finalists who will compete for first place in London on Sept. 24. This year's competition theme is "Designs for the next 90 years." Filosa's design is Renew, a smart steamer that refreshes and cleans clothes. The design includes an infrared scanner and radio frequency identification that gather information about a garment from specifically designed clothing tags. Electrolux Design Lab is an annual global design competition open to undergraduate and graduate industrial design students who are invited to present ideas for household appliances of the future. • Student honors:

- Denae Pyle, a Purdue sophomore, was crowned the 2010 Miss Indiana State Fair on Aug. 23. A 19-year-old native of Silver Lake, Ind., Pyle is the first Kosciusko County Fair Queen to win the title at the state level. She competed against 87 contestants from around the state. Pyle is majoring in hospitality and tourism management in the College of Consumer and Family Sciences.
