College of Liberal Arts names 2009 distinguished alumni

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University's College of Liberal Arts honored five people as its 2009 distinguished alumni.

Recipients are Mark S. Andrews, M. Leroy Keyes, Lorraine Olson Ramig, Thomas H. Scholl and John W. Stauffer. They were honored at a banquet on Friday (April 17).

* Andrews is associate general manager for "The Phantom of the Opera" in Las Vegas. He earned his bachelor's degree in speech in 1971.

* Keyes is assistant director of the John Purdue Club in West Lafayette, and he played professional football for five years with the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs. He earned his bachelor's degree in physical recreation education in 1969.

* Ramig is a professor in the Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences at the University of Colorado in Boulder and senior scientist for the National Center for Voice and Speech. She earned her doctorate degree in speech pathology and speech science in 1980.

* Scholl is a general partner at Novak Biddle Venture Partners in Bethesda, Md. He earned his bachelor's degree in philosophy in 1970.

* Stauffer is chair of the history of American civilization program and professor of English and African and African-American studies at Harvard University in Cambridge. He earned his master's degree in American studies in 1993.

The College of Liberal Arts encompasses 12 academic departments: anthropology, communication; English; foreign languages and literatures; health and kinesiology; history; philosophy; political science; psychological sciences; sociology; speech, language and hearing sciences; and visual and performing arts.

The college is home to 17 interdisciplinary programs: African-American studies, American studies, Asian studies, Asian-American studies, classical studies, comparative literature, film studies, global studies, Italian studies, Jewish studies, Latin-American and Latino studies, linguistics, medieval and renaissance studies, peace studies, philosophy and literature, religious studies, and women's studies.
