Appointments, honors and activities

• Appointments and promotions

— Roger Stewart has been named director of Graduate Career Services at Krannert School of Management. He had been serving as interim director since October. Previously, he worked for 30 years at Procter & Gamble, retiring as vice president of global treasury. He has served, and will continue to serve, on the finance faculty, teaching the master's and executive MBA programs.

• Faculty and staff honors

— Phil Nelson, the Scholle Chair Professor in Food Processing, was recently named as the recipient of the 2009 Harris Award for Excellence in Food Science and Technology from Ohio State University. The award is given every year to an individual who shows excellence and contributions to the discipline of food science. Nelson was chosen for the award because of his accomplishments in food science, including being the winner of the 2007 World Food Prize, the first department head in food science when the department was first created and co-authoring three textbooks.

— U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has appointed Purdue professor Eugene Spafford to the U.S. Air Force Air University board of directors. The board is composed of members who are eminent authorities in the fields of air power, defense, management, leadership and academia. Members provide  independent advice and recommendations on matters pertaining to the educational, doctrinal and research policies and activities of Air University. The USAF Air University includes several institutions. Spafford, a professor of computer science and the executive director for Purdue's Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security, has previously served the Air Force as a member of its scientific advisory board from 1999-2003. He also was a consultant to the board in 2007-08. He continues to serve in several other senior government advisory positions, including the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee, the National Science Foundation, the NSA, GAO and FBI.

• Student honors

— Students in the Krannert School of Management's Master's of Science in Human Resources Management recently staged a case competition at Purdue. The Krannert team won the competition, beating teams from schools such as Darden, Emory and Georgetown. The winning team members were Royce Carvalho, Kim Corbitt, Jason LeBron and Amber Oliver.
