Purdue librarian develops, teaches class in community

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A Purdue University librarian provided hands-on training on basic computer skills and the Internet during a three-session class for the Lafayette Adult Resource Academy (LARA), as part of the Libraries' community outreach and engagement initiatives.

Catherine Fraser Riehle, assistant professor of library science and instructional outreach librarian, used funding from the Purdue Employees Federal Credit Union to develop and teach the class in November. Participants met for 90 minutes each Friday for three weeks and used laptops to learn the basics.

The class filled up quickly after it was set up, and drew some people wanting to enhance their computer skills for the job market to retirees learning to use computers. Riehle said she hopes to offer another series of workshops at LARA in the spring.

LARA is a federally and state funded Adult Basic Education program under the auspices of the Indiana State Department of Education, Center for Community Relations and Special Populations. Locally, LARA operates under the umbrella of the Lafayette School Corp., which receives United Way funding for the main center at 1100 Elizabeth Street. LARA's mission is to teach basic, academic, English as a First Language, life, and workforce skills so that learners may make productive, ongoing changes in their personal lives, in society, and in public policy.
