Purdue students, faculty, staff help community on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Volunteers from Purdue University helped agencies in the Greater Lafayette community Monday (Jan. 19) as part of the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration.

The celebration culminates with an event on environmental racism at 7 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 22) in Lawson Computer Science Building, Room 1142.

Purdue students, faculty and staff worked throughout the area, assisting with painting and cleaning projects as well as helping with day-to-day needs. The volunteers attended an appreciation luncheon at Shreve Hall after finishing their work.

The idea behind the Day of Service is to help those in the community in need, said Alysa Christmas Rollock, vice president for ethics and compliance at Purdue.

Thursday's event is free and open to the public. Preregistration is not necessary, but it is encouraged. For more information or to preregister, contact the Diversity Resource Office at (765) 494-7307.
