Johnson named interim chief diversity officer at PurdueWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
The new position will serve as a focal point for the university's efforts to foster an environment of inclusiveness, Provost Randy Woodson said. Johnson will report to Woodson and serve as a member of the President's Cabinet. "Carolyn will be working to bring together all aspects of Purdue's diversity efforts and ensure activities are coordinated across the campus," Woodson said. "Meanwhile, Purdue launched a national search to find the most qualified candidates for our vice provost for diversity and chief diversity officer." "Diversity is a key part of the university’s strategic plan," Johnson said. "I look forward to helping Purdue continue its quest. Much has been done; much is left to do." Johnson, a former public school teacher who has been involved with educational and social projects around the world, also served as a senior administrator for Dallas Public Schools. She had served as senior research associate for the African American Studies and Research Center in the College of Liberal Arts. She serves on the President's Council of DePauw University, in Greencastle, Ind.; the board of directors for the Institut Oecuménique Bossey joint doctoral program at the University of Geneva, Switzerland; and has been a consultant to numerous school districts and international agencies on the topics of teacher training, curriculum development, instructional planning and global education. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in elementary education from Indiana University. Johnson earned her doctorate in education administration from Purdue in 1985 and began work in the African American Studies and Research Center.
