Appointments, honors and activities

• Appointments and promotions:

— Nathan Hartman, assistant professor of computer graphics technology, has been appointed co-director of the Product Lifecycle Management Center of Excellence in Discovery Park.

— Five new members have been selected to serve a three-year term on Purdue University's Technical Assistance Program advisory council. They include:

* John C. Vellinger, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Techshot in Greenville, Ind.

* Jean C. Neel, vice president of corporate affairs for Haynes International Inc. in Kokomo, Ind.

* W. Scott Baker, operations manager of Whitney Tool Company, Inc., in Bedford, Ind.

* Jerry Jackson, president of Apex Precision Technologies in Camby, Ind.

* Michael F. Bailey, vice president of operations of Evansville ARC Industries in Evansville, Ind.

 The Technical Assistance Program supports performance improvement in Indiana companies and organizations by connecting them with Purdue experts who can help solve technical problems and increase efficiency. Staff members in nine offices throughout Indiana serve companies, hospitals, health departments and governmental units.

• Campus activities:

— Executive Vice President Morgan Olsen will present the first Catalyst Award at 1:15 p.m. Sept. 5 in the upper lobby of Elliot Hall of Music. The $5,000 prize recognizes and promotes excellence in enhancing diversity and inclusiveness in the work environment.  International desserts will be served. — A callout for the 2009 Burton D. Morgan Business Plan Competition will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 9 and 10 in the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship, Room 121. The competition, scheduled for February 2009, offers a total prize package of $100,000. The 22nd annual competition is open to all Purdue students. • Faculty and staff honors:

— Wabash Center Inc. presented Purdue's Technical Assistance Program with its 2008 Innovation Award. The Technical Assistance Program has worked on projects with the center since 1996, including quality control implementation and determining ease-of-use fixtures for manufacturing. Wabash Center works with individuals with disabilities and special needs to optimize the quality of their lives. The Technical Assistance Program connects Indiana companies and organizations with Purdue experts who assist with a variety of performance improvement projects.
