July 11, 2008 Appointments, honors and activities• Appointments and promotions: — Susan O'Shea is the new director of development research services. O'Shea is a graduate of Franklin College and the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. She most recently served as the associate director of research services. — Diane Klassen is the new co-director of development for the Purdue President's Council. Klassen most recently worked as the division director responsible for fundraising for the March of Dimes. — Brent Hornett is the new co-director of development for the Purdue President's Council. He previously worked at Alcoa Fastening Systems as a customer services representative. He earned his bachelor's degree from DePauw University in 2004. — Cele Flanary is the new associate director of the Purdue President's Council. Flanary earned a bachelor's degree from Purdue, and has served both as office and events coordinator for Special Events, and most recently as associate director of special events.
• Faculty and staff honors: — A technical paper describing research led by Issam Mudawar, a professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue, has recently been listed as one of the most cited papers by the International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer. The paper, titled "Experimental and numerical study of pressure drop and heat transfer in a single-phase micro-channel heat sink," was published in 2002. "The popularity of your work suggests that it is of particular interest and value to researchers in the field, and we are delighted that you chose to publish it in our journal," said Carrie Chritensen, publisher of the journal. He is editor of Education and Culture, the journal of the John Dewey Society for the Study of Education and Culture. His research interests include the cultural foundations of education with an emphasis on the moral dimensions of teacher education, P-12 educational leadership and higher education. He is involved in campuswide efforts regarding research ethics and the responsible conduct of research. Previously, he served as interim head of the Department of Educational Studies from 2001-02 and as associate dean from 1994-2001. He received his doctorate in philosophy from Northwestern University in 1982. The appointment is effective through June 30, 2010. — Doran French has been appointed head of the Department of Child Development and Family Studies. He previously worked at Illinois Wesleyan University where he was professor and chair of the Department of Psychology. His career of more than 30 years includes clinical experience as a licensed psychologist and faculty positions at Lewis and Clark College, University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of Rhode Island. His research interests include neuropsychology of social interaction, religion and social competence, peer relationships, cultural psychology, and conflict. — Sugato Chakravarty has been appointed head of the Department of Consumer Sciences and Retailing. He previously served as interim head of the area. A member of the Purdue faculty since 1993, Chakravarty has earned numerous awards for his research involving investments, market microstructure, international small business, and corporate finance; and family economics related to investments and retirement. — Richard A. Cosier, dean and Leeds Professor of Management at the Krannert School of Management, began a one-year term July 1 as chair of the board of directors of AACSB International, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. AACSB International is an association of more than 1,100 educational institutions, businesses and other organizations in 70 countries that are dedicated to the advancement of business education worldwide.
