June 27, 2008 Purdue removing Visual Studio software from Microsoft campus agreementWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University is dropping Visual Studio from its list of products available to students at the BoilerCopyMaker store in the Purdue Memorial Union because Microsoft now allows students to download the software for free directly from its site. Now that Visual Studio is no longer part of Purdue's campus agreement with Microsoft, students who obtained the software from BoilerCopyMaker and have not yet graduated need to uninstall or replace it with the Microsoft version before July 1. Microsoft DreamSpark is available online at https://downloads.channel8.msdn.com This condition was built into the user agreement when students initially obtained the software, said George Wyncott, software information manager for the Office of Information Technology at Purdue's contracts and licensing. "We recognize the contractual inconvenience to students who already have Visual Studio installed, but that's outweighed by dual benefits of still being able to run the software and significant cost savings to the university," Wyncott said. Students who graduated before July 1 may continue using the product. Faculty and staff purchases of Visual Studio will not be affected by the agreement change.
