Alert: Gas leak near Russell Street, Wiley Hall repaired

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - A gas line rupture on Wednesday (June 18) that forced the evacuation of Wiley Hall and some residences along Russell Street has been repaired.

The leak occurred around 10 a.m. when an asphalt and paving contractor working in the area hit a two-inch gas line. Purdue University police and fire departments evacuated Wiley Hall and residences at 409, 427 and 501 Russell Street as a precautionary measure.

A crew from Vectren Energy was called to the scene and repaired the broken line by 12:30 p.m. After checking the evacuated areas to ensure they were safe, fire department personnel reopened Wiley Hall and the residences.
