Purdue group begins collection for Chinese earthquake victims

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University Chinese Students and Scholars Association has begun a collection to help victims of the 7.9-magnitude earthquake that struck China on May 12.

According to Jingyao (Isabella) Zhang, the organization's president, the Purdue group has already collected about $6,000 for the relief effort. Zhang said the group will send all the donations it receives to the Silicon Valley Tsinghua Network's China Earthquake Relief Fund, which will forward 100 percent of the money to the Red Cross Society of China.

As of Tuesday (May 27), the quake's death toll had risen to more than 67,000 people, with over 353,000 people injured and more than 21,000 reported missing.

Checks can be made payable to Charity Purdue University Chinese Students and Scholars Association and sent to Purdue University, Stewart Center, Box 616, West Lafayette, IN 47907. Donors should note on the check that the donation is for the earthquake victims. For information, e-mail cssapurdue@gmail.com  or visit https://www.pucssa.org
