Purdue offers two camps focusing on computer graphics

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - High school students can learn more about computer graphics and possible career paths at two computer graphics technology summer camps in June at Purdue University.

The Department of Computer Graphics Technology will offer an advanced-level camp June 15-20 and a beginner's-level camp June 22-27.

Students in both camps will learn fundamentals in 3-D modeling, animation, scripting, illustration, image editing, Web design and interactive media development. Participants will use a variety of software programs commonly used by computer graphics artists, including 3D Studio Max, Maya, Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator and RHINO.

Camp activities include animation festivals, gaming tournaments, field trips, bowling and billiards at the Purdue Memorial Union, and swimming and games at the Recreational Sports Center.

Both camps are open to students in grades 7-12, and both are residential, with students staying in Purdue residence halls. Both camps will be taught by Purdue computer graphics technology professors and graduate students.

Kellen Maicher, an assistant professor of computer graphics technology and one of the coordinators of the camps, said they decided to offer a camp for those with some experience in computer graphics because of high demand in past years.

The advanced camp, open only to students who have either attended the beginner's camp or possess advanced skills, will feature daylong sessions designed to be rigorous and learning-intensive. The beginner's camp is open to those with no previous background in computer graphics and will feature half-day sessions.

The cost to attend is $850, which includes accommodations in a residence hall, meals in a dining court, all materials and supplies, entertainment, and a ticket for the student to attend an awards luncheon on the last day of camp.

Registrations for both camps are due by May 31.
