April 21, 2008 Purdue police stress safety as academic year nears endWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue police are urging members of the university community to take safety precautions and to be vigilant in protecting valuables from potential theft as the academic year comes to a close."It's the last two weeks of classes, it's warming up and people are moving around more, so we typically see an increase in thefts of textbooks, electronic devices and laptops during this time," Purdue police Lt. Fred Davis said. "Just taking a few simple precautions will help people keep their belongings secure." Police suggest people use locks to protect any valuables or to place items in a secure place. Police also suggest locking doors to rooms and offices that are unattended, even if leaving them for only a few minutes. Davis also suggests not leaving books or other property unattended in gymnasiums, libraries, classrooms or other places where people congregate. Joggers and bicyclists also should be more aware of increased traffic with the added activity outdoors, Davis said.
