College of Consumer and Family Sciences names 2008 distinguished alumni

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University College of Consumer and Family Sciences honored five people as its 2008 distinguished alumni and recognized two people with specialty awards.

Distinguished alumni are Rosella McKinley Bannister, Bill Edmundson, Jane Maple Horner, Hailin Qu and Sister Mary Stuart. They were honored at a banquet on Friday (April 11).

* McKinley Bannister is a principal of Bannister Financial Education Services LLC in Ann Arbor, Mich. She also manages the online Personal Finance Clearinghouse of the national Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy in Washington, D.C. She previously served as the executive director of the National Institute for Consumer Education at Eastern Michigan University. She earned her bachelor's degree in consumer and family sciences in 1955.

* Edmundson, of Chicago, is a retired principal of Tenacity, a strategic consulting firm to large service corporations. Prior to his tenure at Tenacity, he spent more than 40 years in the foods and beverage industry and held leadership positions in military club management, public restaurants and contract food services. He earned his bachelor's degree in hospitality and tourism management in 1962.

* Maple Horner, of Bunker Hill, Ind., is an assistant professor of early childhood education at Ivy Tech Community College in Logansport, Ind. She previously worked in both community and university childcare settings. She completed her bachelor's degree in child development and family studies in 1984.

* Qu is the Regents Professor and William E. Davis Distinguished Chair in the school of hotel and restaurant administration at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla. He also is director of the Center for Hospitality and Tourism Research there. He completed both his master's and doctoral degrees in hospitality and tourism management at Purdue in 1989 and 1992, respectively.

* Sister Mary Stuart is a volunteer registered dietitian for Appalachian Outreach Nutrition Services of Saint Joseph HealthCare in Lexington, Ky. She retired as the hospital's outreach dietitian in 2002 after more than 15 years with the program, which she expanded to include 10 rural clinics and a mobile clinic. She also has taught at the elementary and high school levels and spent seven years in nutrition research and dietetics at the University of Kentucky. She earned her doctoral degree in foods and nutrition in 1983.

* Zoe Coulson, of Philadelphia, Pa., received the community service award, which recognizes alumni for demonstrated leadership ability in their community, either by developing or making significant contributions to programs that enhance quality of life for families and communities.

Coulson is director of the Harvard Business School Club of Philadelphia where her committee plans “Strategies for Non-Profit Managers,” an annual program for directors of more than 50 local nonprofit organizations. She has been an active volunteer for social, community and university programs throughout her lifetime. She earned her bachelor's degree in consumer and family sciences education in 1954.

* Jon and Margaret Gossard Story, of West Lafayette, received the Friend of Purdue award, which honors those who have made significant contributions to the college through personal or professional influence, service or financial support. Jon Story is a professor in the department of foods and nutrition and also associate dean in the Office of Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs of the Graduate School. Margie Gossard Story is an academic adviser in the department of consumer sciences and retailing. The Storys were chosen for their commitment to welcoming and mentoring students, faculty and staff.
