EVENTS

-- April 3. Noon to 1:30 p.m. Indianapolis Marriott Downtown, 350 W. Maryland St., Indianapolis. A. Charlene Sullivan, associate professor of management at Purdue University, will give a presentation titled, "Is Recession Inevitable," at President's Executive Roundtable Luncheon. Purdue President France A. Córdova also will speak and make a major announcement. -- April 5. 10:30 a.m. Purdue Armory. The 26th annual national Rube Goldberg Machine Contest. Students from around the country will create complex machines to accomplish a simple task. This year's task is to assemble a hamburger consisting of no less than one precooked meat patty, two vegetables and two condiments, sandwiched between two bun halves. The contest is sponsored by Phi Chapter of Theta Tau fraternity and is free and open to the public.

-- April 11. 2 p.m. Elliott Hall of Music. Inauguration of Purdue's 11th president, France A. Córdova, culminates a celebration that includes Global University Convocation and a faculty symposium on interdisciplinary topics. Córdova became Purdue's 11th president on July 16. Before arriving at Purdue, Córdova had served as chancellor of University of California, Riverside, since 2002. -- April 12. 7:30 a.m. to noon. Purdue Airport, Hangar 5. Purdue Fly-In/Drive-In. Several Purdue aviation technology student groups are sponsoring the networking event, which features an all-you-can-eat breakfast. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children 10 and under. Proceeds from the event will be split among the student groups. Participants have the option of either flying in to the airport or driving. -- April 12-13. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Purdue Spring Fest. Event across the Purdue campus is marking its 10th anniversary. Returning favorites this year include Bug Bowl and interactive exhibits and activities from more than 34 Purdue colleges, departments and campus organizations. Newcomers Discovery Park, Purdue Cancer Center, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, School of Nursing, Purdue Worklife Programs and the Purdue Repertory Dance Company also are participating. -- April 12. 1-3 p.m. Latino Cultural Center, 600 Russell St. Purdue Latino Cultural Center celebrating its fifth anniversary at Dia de la Familia (Day of the Family). Event includes dedication of a student's artwork, tours, games and activities for youth, and snacks and desserts including birthday cake. -- April 15. 8 p.m. Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse. Pulitzer prize-winning author Michael Chabon, author of "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay" and "Wonder Boys," is the featured speaker for the 77th annual Literary Awards.  The reading is free and open to the public. Prior to Chabon's reading, Literary Awards recipients will be honored at a banquet at 5:30 p.m. in Purdue Memorial Union's North Ballroom. Chabon also will speak at the banquet about the writing process. Tickets for the banquet are $15 for students and $25 for non-students, and they can be purchased in Heavilon Hall, Room 324, or by calling the English department at (765) 494-3740. April 9 is the last day to buy tickets. The ticket price includes a predinner reception, banquet dinner, the awards ceremony and Chabon's talk on the creative process. Chabon also will sign books after the reading in Loeb Playhouse. Books can be purchased on site from Von's books. Cash or check payment will be accepted.

 

ENTERTAINMENT

-- Through April 6. Carole and Gordon Mallett Theatre, Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts. "Marat/Sade." Presented by Purdue Theatre, the play was written by German playwright Peter Weiss in 1964 and has the full title of "The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade." Recommended for adult audiences only due to adult content. Performances are offered at 7:30 p.m. March 27, 7:30 p.m. March 28, 7:30 p.m. March 29, 3 and 7:30 p.m. March 30, 7:30 p.m. April 4, 3 and 7:30 p.m. April 5 and 3 p.m. April 6. -- March 28. 8 p.m. Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse. Super Jazz Jam featuring the Purdue jazz bands and ensembles. Concert will feature a variety of music including signature tunes by the Brian Setzer Orchestra.

-- April 1. 7:30 p.m. Elliott Hall of Music. Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra presenting "The Eroica Effect: Inside Beethoven's Third Symphony." Presented by Purdue Convocations. Tickets are $10-25 for adults and $10 for children 18 years and younger, Purdue students and Ivy Tech Lafayette students. -- April 10. 7:30 p.m. Elliott Hall of Music. Dierks Bentley with special guests Bucky Covington and Luke Bryan. The Throttle Wide Open Tour is presented by Purdue Convocations in cooperation with Bravo Entertainment. -- April 25. Elliott Hall of Music. Comedians Stephen Lynch and Charlie Murphy performing "Last Blast: A Double Shot of Comedy." Sponsored by the Student Concert Committee. Language advisory. -- Through March 28. Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries, Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts. Metonym, an exhibition of works by Anju Kulkarni.

-- Through April 12. Shook Room of Art Museum of Greater Lafayette, 102 S. 10th St., Lafayette. An exhibition of hats worn by African-American women in Lafayette churches. Call (765) 494-3092.

-- Through April 20. "Autotelematic Spider Bots." Stewart Center Gallery. Made by artist Ken Rinaldo, an associate professor of art and technology at Ohio State University, the Spider Bots are five spider-like sculptures that interact with the public in real-time and self-modify their behaviors based on their interaction with the viewer, themselves and their environment. They will function for 15-minute periods at 10:30 a.m. and at 12:30, 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. daily. -- Through April 20. "Machinic Drift." Robert L. Ringel Gallery in the Purdue Memorial Union. Various interactive works and imagery by artist Ken Rinaldo, including robotic fish and electronic sound work sculptures. -- Through April 29. "Chronicling Women's History at Purdue: Selections from the Susan Bulkeley Butler Women's Archives." The exhibit will feature artifacts, documents and photographs highlighting the history of university women and coinciding with Women's History Month. The exhibit includes collections on the "Queen of American Agriculture," the "Mother of Modern Management," Amelia Earhart and more. In Stewart Center, Room 279. LECTURES

-- March 29. 1 p.m. Elliott Hall of Music. Jane Goodall will present "Reason for Hope." Goodall will address her pioneering work with chimpanzees and information about the education, conservation and sustainable development programs of the Jane Goodall Institute. A UN Messenger of Peace,  Goodall travels more than 300 days a year discussing why she is still hopeful about the future and encouraging audiences to recognize their ability to effect change. Tickets are available through Purdue box offices and Ticketmaster. The cost is $15 for all students with a valid student ID and $21 for the general public. Also available are $100 Centennial Seats, which include a $79 charitable contribution to the Centennial Scholarship Fund and a private reception before the event. Additional proceeds from the presentation will benefit the Centennial Scholarship Fund. ** -- April 10. 10:30 a.m. Stewart Center's Fowler Hall. Sigmar Wittig, former council chair of the European Space Agency and the chairman emeritus of the German Aerospace Center, "Space Policy in an Enlarged European Union." William E. Boeing Distinguished Lecture Series.

-- April 17. 7 p.m. Stewart Center's Fowler Hall. Paul Sarbanes, former U.S. senator and co-author of Sarbanes-Oxley Act, will speak as part of the university's Series on Corporate Citizenship and Ethics. Sarbanes is best known for his role in the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, a federal law that was enacted in response to a number of major corporate and accounting scandals.

-- April 18. 10:30 a.m. Stewart Center's Fowler Hall. A lecture series created to honor a longtime Purdue professor will address nutrition in breastfed infants. Kathryn Dewey, a professor in the department of nutrition at the University of California, Davis, will present "What are the problem nutrients for breastfed infants?" during the 2008 Avanelle Kirksey Lecture. STUDENTS

-- Ongoing. Registration now under way for summer and fall classes. The summer semester begins May 12 and runs through Aug. 1. The fall semester begins Aug. 25 and ends Dec. 20. Students should make appointments with their academic advisers or contact the registrar's office at (765) 494-8581.

-- March 28. 5 p.m. Purdue Student Union Board office, Purdue Memorial Union, Room 268. Deadline for Battle of the Band demos. Interested bands must have at least one Purdue student in the group. Bands must turn in a demo and a $15 submission fee. The top five bands that enter will be selected to participate in the Battle of the Bands competition on April 18 for a cash prize.

 

SEMINARS

-- April 1. Noon to 5 p.m. Lynn Hall of Veterinary Medicine. Phi Zeta Research Day. The 21st anniversary celebration, sponsored by Purdue's Omicron chapter of Phi Zeta, the national honor society of veterinary medicine, begins at noon in the hallways of the Lynn Hall of Veterinary Medicine with poster sessions and short presentations about current research. The keynote address at 4 p.m. will be vaccination lessons from infectious diseases in chickens, including avian influenza, with a lecture from Karel Antoni Schat, professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University.

-- March 28-31. Marriott Indianapolis Downtown, 350 W. Maryland St. Nurses from across the Midwest will convene in Indianapolis to discuss global health-care concerns during a conference sponsored by Purdue University's School of Nursing and Indiana University's School of Nursing. The Midwest Nursing Research Society's 2008 conference, Nursing Research: At the Crossroads of Global Health, is expected to draw about 1,000 nursing professionals and students from a 13-state region. Collectors of Longaberger merchandise will have the chance to hear more about the business behind the baskets during a leadership conference at Purdue University on April 11. The 2008 Felker Leadership Series will use the theme Women in Leadership: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future to pay tribute to outstanding women leaders. Conference titled Research Solutions in Healthcare: Successes, Challenges and Lessons Learned will include panel discussions on patient safety, chronic care, patient scheduling and fostering research collaborations. Michael F. Hindmarsh, associate director of clinical improvement for the MacColl Institute for Healthcare Innovation at health-care provider Group Health, will deliver the keynote address on redesigning health care to meet needs of the chronically ill. -- April 24-25. Stewart Center. Researchers from around the world will meet at Purdue University for a two-day Hydrogen Symposium 2008 conference to discuss innovative hydrogen-based energy concepts at. Public and private sector representatives participating in the symposium include researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy, the General Motors R&D and Planning Center, Praxair Inc., the Scripps Research Institute, Case Western Reserve University, 3M Co., the University of Tennessee, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Los Alamos National Laboratory. The registration fee is $150 for registrants from outside of Purdue and $50 for Purdue faculty and staff. Registration is free for students.
