March 17, 2008 Annual lecture to focus on infant nutritionWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -
Kathryn Dewey, a professor in the department of nutrition at the University of California, Davis, will present "What are the problem nutrients for breastfed infants?" at 10:30 a.m. in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall during the 2008 Avanelle Kirksey Lecture. Dewey, interim director of the Program in International and Community Nutrition at Davis, researches maternal and child nutrition in both affluent and low-income countries. She focuses on lactation and infant nutrition. Dewey has conducted research in the United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Peru, Indonesia, Thailand and Ghana. She provides consultation for the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the Pan American Health Organization and the March of Dimes. She has served as president of the Society for International Nutrition Research and is president of the International Society for Research on Human Milk and Lactation. Dewey received the Norman Kretchmer Memorial Award in Nutrition and Development from the American Society for Clinical Nutrition in 1997, the March of Dimes Agnes Higgins Award in 2000 and the Kellogg Prize for International Nutrition Research from the Society for International Nutrition Research in 2005. She has published more than 200 papers on maternal and child nutrition. She received her doctorate in biological sciences from the University of Michigan in 1980. The annual lecture series honors Kirksey, the Meredith Distinguished Professor Emerita in Purdue's department of foods and nutrition. Kirksey is known for her work in translating basic science into a better understanding of the relationship of diet to human behavior and cognition.
