Appointments, honors and activities

Appointments and promotions:

- Sandra Howarth is the new director of development for the College of Science. Howarth most recently served as the executive director of the Perry Township Education Foundation and previously worked as director of development for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Indianapolis. She is a graduate of St. Mary of the Woods College and the Indiana University Fundraising School.

- Christina Landon will be an information systems data analyst at Purdue, effective March 24. Landon, a Purdue graduate, previously served as lead developer at the Purdue Employees Federal Credit Union as an analyst for Cinergy Services Inc.

- Shari Schrader, director of development for the School of Chemical Engineering, has accepted the position of director of advancement for the College of Technology, effective April 7. Schrader came to Purdue with a degree from Central Michigan University, followed by experience in both public relations and development. 

- Javier Magallanes, who has served as the director of development for the President’s Council and the Latino Cultural Center, has accepted the position of director of development for the College of Science, effective March 24. He received his undergraduate degree in science from Purdue and has been actively involved with the Latino Association, the YWCA and Leadership Lafayette. 

 

Faculty and staff honors:

- Jay Gephart, director of Purdue Bands and director of the "All-American" Marching Band, was elected to membership in the American Bandmasters Association during its annual convention held in Miami. Gephart was one of nine people selected to join the group in 2008. The purpose of the American Bandmasters Association is to recognize achievement and foster a high standard of excellence for the concert band, its performers, standard and literature. The American Bandmasters Association honors achievement by inviting composers and conductors to membership.

- Sandy Amass, a professor of the School of Veterinary Medicine, received the Meritorious Service Award from the American Associations of Swine Veterinarians. This award recognized individuals who have provided outstanding service to the association. Amass has been active as a reviewer on the editorial board of the Journal of Swine Health and Productions, a former managing editor of the AASV's e-letter, co-chair of the association's Collegiate Activities Committee, a member of the communications committee and AASV subcommittee of the American Veterinary Medical Association Drug Advisory Committee.

- LaVerne Abe Harris, an associate professor of computer graphics technology, received  the Educator of the Year Award from the Electronic Document Systems Foundation, an international, nonprofit organization dedicated to the document management and graphic communications marketplace. The award, sponsored by Canon, is presented to academic professionals at both the college and secondary school levels who are dedicated to the advancement of the industry through education. Harris was honored for her contributions in the classroom with her students, in curriculum development and within the document management and communications marketplace. 

- Scott Ksander, the executive director of IT networks and security at Purdue, is a nominee for the Executive Alliance's Information Security Executive of the Year Central Awards 2008. The awards recognize executives and their teams for outstanding leadership and innovation in the information security industry across a 16-state region. Nominees and winners will be announced at an awards ceremony April 17 in Dallas.

 

Alumni honors:

- Jason Kelly, a 2003 Purdue graduate, received the Young Swine Veterinarian of the Year Award from the American Associations of Swine Veterinarians. This award is given to an American Associations of Swine Veterinarians member five or less years post graduation who has demonstrated the ideals of exemplary service and proficiency early in his or her career. Kelly is a swine practitioner and managing partner at Suidae Health and Production, a swine-exclusive practice of sex swine veterinarians serving clients in Iowa and the Midwest.

  

Student honors:

- Purdue's student chapter of the Mechanical Contractors Association of America was recently selected as student chapter of the year by the national organization. Students were rated on student chapter activities completed in 2007. They were judged in the following categories: governance, communication, community service, career development, competition participation, membership, fundraising, field trips, internships and employment. Daphene Cyr Koch, assistant professor in the Department of Building Construction Management, is the faculty adviser to the Purdue group.
