Dairy ambassador program to target high school, college students

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The deadline to apply for the 2008 Indiana Dairy Ambassador Program is April 1.

The program, sponsored by Purdue University Cooperative Extension service, Indiana Professional Dairy Producers and Elanco Animal Health, consists of two divisions: the senior division, which is open to college students under the age of 22; and the junior division, which is open to youth in grades nine through 12.

"The goal of the program is to provide youth with an opportunity to promote the dairy industry and to take part in other dairy-related meetings throughout the state," said Kelly Easterday, Purdue University Extension educator.

If chosen as the senior ambassador, the winner will serve on the Dairy Youth Conference planning committee and on one or more subcommittees. He or she also will participate in dairy-related activities in six Indiana counties during the year and co-emcee the 2009 Indiana Dairy Youth Conference.

The junior ambassador will take part in six dairy-related activities in two Indiana counties and co-emcee the 2009 Indiana Dairy Youth Conference.

"This year we want to make the program more specific to the winners and their passion," Easterday said. "Whether it's food or promotions, we will work to help them develop their own educational program when visiting the counties."

In doing so, the winners will get the opportunity to learn more about the industry and do it in a way that interests them, Easterday said.

Last year's applicants shared many ideas that could be developed into great educational programs, Easterday said.

A completed contest application packet, which includes an application form, essay, resume and code of conduct acknowledgement, must be submitted to the IDYC planning committee by the April 1 deadline.
