Boiler Vet Camp to give 8th graders hands-on experience

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine is looking for incoming eighth-grade students to attend Boiler Vet Camp on June 18-21.

Boiler Vet Camp will give attendees the opportunity to experience veterinary school and college life at one of only 28 veterinary schools in the country and the only one in Indiana. Application deadline is March 15.

Through presentations, demonstrations, laboratories, visits and in-depth, hands-on activities, students will discover what modern veterinary medicine is all about, said Denise Ottinger, director of student services for Purdue's School of Veterinary Medicine. Through this three-day, on-campus course, students have an opportunity to experience what it is like to attend veterinary school and what it takes to become a veterinarian.

"We've structured this camp to engage the students in a way they can't experience through books and Web sites alone," Ottinger said. "For example, at the end of camp students will be given a case, similar to those found in our Veterinary Teaching Hospital. They'll work through diagnosing the problem and determining treatments. This allows them to experience a team problem-solving approach."

Because the camp is limited to 35 attendees, organizers require an application and expect strong competition for the available places.

"The fact of the matter is that competition to get into veterinary school is tough," said Willie Reed, dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine. "This camp will give us the opportunity to meet potential applicants early in their education, explain what they need to do to prepare themselves for veterinary school, and expose them to what veterinary education is actually like. We're looking for students who are serious in their desire to become a veterinarian."

Application information is available at https://www.vet.purdue.edu/boilervetcamp/index.html  or by calling the school's office of student services at (765) 494-7893. Cost is $500, scholarships are available.
