February 4, 2008 Writing contest open to Purdue, Indiana high school studentsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University students and Indiana high school students are invited to submit their writing to the 77th annual Literary Awards contest, which features more than 70 awards, totaling over $10,000 in prize money.The deadline for submission is 5 p.m. Feb. 15. The categories cover a wide range of fields for undergraduate and graduate students, including fiction, poetry, philosophy, literary criticism, history, and rhetoric and composition. Indiana high school teachers who are interested in more information can contact Christian Knoeller, associate professor of English and curriculum and instruction, at knoeller@purdue.edu. The awards will be presented at the Literary Awards Banquet at 5:30 p.m. April 15 in the Purdue Memorial Union's North Ballroom. Pulitzer-prize winning author Michael Chabon is the featured speaker. He will address the winners at the banquet and give a talk, which is free and open to the public, at 8 p.m. in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse. More information about ticket prices for the banquet will be available in March. Chabon's works include "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay," which won the Pulitzer Prize, "Gentlemen of the Road," "The Yiddish Policemen's Union," "Wonder Boys" and "The Mysteries of Pittsburgh." He also is author of the young adult novel "Summerland" and the short story collections "Werewolves in Their Youth" and "A Model World." Chabon also has published numerous essays, screenplays and novellas, and edited anthologies including the "2005 Best American Short Stories." His novel "Wonder Boys" was adapted for a 2000 film starring Michael Douglas. Literary Awards is sponsored by the Department of English, Purdue Libraries and the College of Liberal Arts.
