January 24, 2008 Purdue police announce laptop computer registration programWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University Police Department has launched an on-line laptop computer registration program. The program is voluntary, but recommended to all students, staff and faculty who own laptop computers. Desktop computers also can be registered. The laptop registration program is similar to the successful bicycle registration program. The owner will be asked to provide, through an online registration form, the serial number, make and model of the laptop. The registration form is available at https://www.purdue.edu/police/programs/ Once the form is submitted, the owner will receive a confirmation advising that their registration is on file. Information provided will be maintained on file at the police department to assist investigators if the registered laptop computer is stolen. It also will allow the department to enter the laptop into a stolen property database that is available to law enforcement officers throughout the United States. The information contained on the registration form also will assist in the return of the registered laptop if it has been reported stolen and is recovered or is lost and then turned in. Police department personnel are available to help complete the form by calling (765) 494-8221 or coming to the department, located at 205 S. Martin Jischke Drive.
