Plush, fashion, posters among exhibits at Purdue's Rueff Galleries

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Patti and Rusty Rueff Galleries at Purdue University are opening the spring season with a variety of exhibits, including shows that feature plush crafts, historic fashions, contemporary prints, poster designs and student art.

Rueff Galleries, located in the Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Visual and Performing Arts, 552 W. Wood St., are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Gallery exhibits are free and open to the public.

Upcoming exhibits include:

* Through Feb. 1. "PLUSHED: art gone soft." This exhibition will feature work from artists currently working as part of a contemporary "do-it-yourself" craft revolution. Focusing specifically on handmade toys, the exhibition will offer visitors the chance to look at the space and overlap between art and design, art and craft, and art and commodity, said Lindi Kistler, gallery coordinator. A reception for this exhibit will take place at 7 p.m. Jan. 24 in the West Gallery.

* Through Feb. 1. "Fashion Forward: Selections from the Purdue University Division of Theatre Special Collection of Historic Dress." This exhibition provides insight into the developments of apparel technology and fashion design from the 1850s to the present through existing examples of clothing and accessories drawn from Purdue University's Division of Theatre. A special reception will take place from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Jan. 24 in the East Gallery.

* Feb. 4-15. "2nd Inklandia Print Exhibition." The 2nd Inklandia Print Exhibition features fine art prints by contemporary American artists and is curated by Laura Foster and Delita Martin. The gallery show includes original prints from the permanent collection of Purdue University Galleries and across the United States by artists including Jaune Quick-To-See Smith, Alison Saar, Luis Jimenez, Kay Walkingstick, Carlos Cortez, T. L. Solein and Robert Arneson.

* Feb. 11-15. "Social Issues and Poster Design." The School of Art at South Central University in China and the Patti and Rusty Rueff Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Purdue organized this exhibition. Works will include poster designs from undergraduate and graduate students from both universities that deal with social issues in the United States and China. A reception for this exhibit will take place from 1-2 p.m. Feb. 15.

* Feb. 18-29. "Art and Design Undergraduate Exhibition." This juried exhibition will include pieces created by undergraduate students from the Patti and Rusty Rueff Department of Visual and Performing Arts. The exhibition will include works of art in ceramics, photography and related media, visual communications design, industrial design, interior design, sculpture, metals, painting, drawing, fiber arts and printmaking. A reception and awards ceremony will take place from 5-6:30 p.m. Feb. 21.
