Purdue student arrested on drug, weapon charges

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue police early Monday (Dec. 3) arrested a university student after drugs and a weapon were found in his residence hall room.

Carlos Joaquin Ramos, 19, a sophomore in the College of Liberal Arts from Gary, Ind., faces preliminary charges of possession of more than 30 grams of marijuana, dealing marijuana within 1,000 feet of a daycare facility, possession of a handgun with an obliterated serial number, possession of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a daycare facility and dealing a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a daycare facility. He was taken to the Tippecanoe County Jail and was being held in lieu of a $50,000 surety bond.

Police were called to Earhart Residence Hall shortly after midnight Monday (Dec. 3) when a student reported seeing someone washing out a marijuana pipe in the restroom and then enter a room on the seventh floor, said Purdue police Lt. Fred Davis.

According to a police report, officers said they were able to smell marijuana in the hallway outside Ramos' room. A Lafayette police officer and his trained dog were called to the room, and the dog signaled that drugs were present.

A warrant was then issued to search the room, and police found more than a pound of marijuana, about $3,400 in cash, several ecstasy tablets, .45 caliber ammunition and a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun with two loaded magazines of ammunition, Davis said.

Ramos was not in his room at the time of the search but was later located in an eighth-floor room and arrested.

Dealing a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a daycare facility is a Class A felony punishable by 50 years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000. Dealing marijuana within 1,000 feet of a daycare facility, possession of a handgun with an obliterated serial number and possession of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a daycare facility are all Class C felonies punishable by up to eight years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000. Possession of marijuana in excess of 30 grams is a Class D felony punishable by up to three years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000.
