Sirens to sound as Purdue evaluates vendor's warning system

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - An outdoor warning siren system will be tested around 3:30 p.m. Thursday (Nov. 29) from the Purdue University Police Department.

Purdue emergency planning representatives will be on hand to review Federal Signal's CampusAlert system, which has a warning siren and the capability to send voice messages, said Ron Wright, director of campus emergency preparedness and planning. Area public safety officials and representatives from Purdue's regional campuses also have been invited to the demonstration.

The test, which is scheduled to last less than 10 minutes, will include a warning siren and a series of vocal messages that state the demonstration is only a test.

The CampusAlert system is designed to provide warnings in case of an emergency through outdoor speakers and text or voice messages sent directly to cellular phones, pagers, e-mail addresses and computers. The system also can be connected to indoor speakers and strobe lights to alert people in residence halls, classrooms or study areas, Wright said.

Purdue officials have been studying a variety of ways to enhance the campus emergency notification plan, which currently includes sirens, text messaging, campuswide e-mails, the Purdue Web site and Facebook.
