Purdue Army ROTC sets memorial service for 2001 graduate

Purdue University's Army ROTC Boiler Battalion will conduct a memorial service on Tuesday (Nov. 20) for Capt. Timothy I. McGovern, a 2001 Purdue graduate who died of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle during combat operations in Mosul, Iraq.The ceremony will take place at 4:30 p.m. in the Purdue Armory. As part of the ceremony, the honor guard from American Legion Post 38 will fire three blank rifle volleys around 5 p.m. near the east doors to the Armory as a memorial to McGovern.

McGovern, of Idaville, Ind., graduated from Purdue with a bachelor's degree in law and society. He was a distinguished military graduate of Army ROTC and a former cadet battalion commander. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division of Fort Bliss, Texas.

McGovern, 28, was an engineer officer who entered the Army in May 2001. He was the company commander for E Company and was previously stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and Fort Campbell, Ky. This was his second tour in Iraq.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Army service ribbon, overseas service ribbon, air assault badge, parachutist badge and Sapper Tab, an engineering honor. He also was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
