Cary Quadrangle wins national award for football viewing event

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University Residences' "Larger Than Life Football" viewing party at Cary Quadrangle won a national award for best social program of the month from the National Association of College and University Residence Halls.

Resident assistants Josh Spoonamore, Nate Gingerich and Lisa Schriver organized the Sept. 22 event at the men's residence hall in the final days before the Purdue Boilermakers' 2007 Big Ten debut against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Fueled by the excitement of a 3-0 start to the season and an inability to make the road trip to Minneapolis, they arranged for maintenance staff to drape a three-story screen from the courtyard side of the complex's west building.

The ESPN broadcast, with audio provided by the residence hall's radio station DJ equipment, drew more than 250 fans to enjoy the game under the stars, including several members of the Purdue football team who are not on the travel squad. The event was profiled on WLFI-TV.

"With Cary Quad housing more than 1,100 men, it is hard to create programming that can be of interest to everyone or accommodate even a substantial minority of them," Spoonamore said. "This program accomplished that with absolutely no cost to the hall or the residents."

Head resident assistant Jason Ford said the event has helped create new bonds among the residents.

"As I walk down the halls of Cary, I still see guys from the program and interact with them when, otherwise, I would have never known them," Ford said. "This program has created waves of new friendships. Cary feels more connected and is a stronger community because of it."
